Today, 29 October, it marks two years since my first interview I did to Phil Catchpole, member at the football team of Wycombe Wanderers for the Boxing Day Special Edition of our fanzine Underdogs. Then, I wanted to celebrate that beautiful moment with all of you, when I dressed on the clothes of an interviewer.

I will talk about Underdogs on next week, as if extend it on today, this post would last for ages, and it’s just Tuesday, so both, you and me, have other duties to perform in this second day of the week (at least for all of you who are lucky to work Monday to Friday 🙏🏼).

Just to introduce it to yourselves, this fanzine called Underdogs came to life in the heart of Wycombe Wanderers, the stadium of Adams Park. And it is in there where we decided to go, with me as a representative of our humble media, for our Special Edition volumen:

– Good afternoon, Phil, nice to meet you.

– You too, you too.

– We are doing a Special Edition for the Boxing Day in our fanzine Underdogs. We would like to know what are your feelings, what do you think about “Boxing Day”, for you, just as a football supporter?

– Boxing Day in football is one of the great traditions in England because Xmas Day, as in most of the countries in the World, the country shots down and everyone is going to see their friends, their family, their love ones and they spend time together. And in Boxing Day is the day when you release to back up because everyone is a bit sloughed as they have been in a lot of food and drink. But for fans is a really good time to come back together because normally, people are travelling all over the world and doing things (the rest of the year) so it means that families and groups of friends are normally together (in these festive days). So Boxing Day tendencies are normally really high as if you go to watch your team, extended families are coming to see you so you take them as well. And it’s normally cold (weather), and the bus is normally full, people are normally off work, having a nice time, and it’s a really great tradition for fans. And it’s quite hard for fans as well because there are a lot of games, but on the Boxing Day, now that restrictions (of Covid, in 2022) were released in June, it will be the first game on this date since three years ago. And it will be even better if your team plays at home on Boxing Day. Cause sometimes, you have to go a long way and even travelling on Xmas Day, the day before. It’s tricky, but if you play at home on Boxing Day, it’s always great.

– That’s good, that’s good. Now, as a Wycombe supporter, as a member of the staff of Wycombe Wonderers, can you tell us what are your feelings on Boxing Day, what do you feel in this Team, what do you see between supporters of the Chairboys?

– Wycombe is a great club to work for. I’ve been a Wycombe supporter since the 1980’s, I love this club. Working here is fantastic because we are a small club with a big heart, which is why I love the tale of our fans as underdogs, because Wycombe Wonderers are underdogs, normally. And it’s a status that we enjoy, we like to be underdogs because it means that, even non-Wycombe fans, neutrals fans who maybe are not involved in a particular game that we are playing in, they like us to win it. Because I am not sure if it is the same in Spain, but in England, people like teams that are underdogs, they like smaller teams to do well. So yes, we like very much to be Underdogs, even in League One there are a lot of really big teams that in the 1990’s were in Premier League who maybe have twenty or twenty five thousands people going to watch their Home game. Here in Wycombe it’s a bit smaller, but we have a great time, we have a great spirit, we have a Rock’n’Roll manager (not any more, and luckily, they are performing a really great season this 2024-25, when I am writing this post 🫶🏼🔝) and we have a great History, in recent History it’s even better.

– Yeah, yeah, I know. So, any fantastic, any best moments on Boxing Day that you could tell us, any match with lot of goals that you remember? Some special party on Boxing Day?

– I think, on Boxing Day, it has always been better to play at home. As a fan, you know, I bring my brother who will not come every week, but he is around for Xmas with my parents… We have all my family to come down. That is a normal occasion for a normal home game to have the whole family, so all are special moments, as a fan. And as someone who work for the club now it’s unique, I remember a Boxing Day’s game, it was an away game, actually, I went to Cheltenham, which is not far away, it was not a long journey, Wycombe Wonderers lost 4-0, and Gareth Gainsworth was the player-manager. I love that game because it was a time when the club had nothing, and it was almost like, I think it was the last 90 minutes that Gareth was a player and it was a point that we had a lot of injured (players) coming back, but it was a real point when we were to achieve really well. We were bottom down and then we came back up again. I’ve got good memories of that game, because it was a miserable game that we lost 4-0. We were really bad on that game, so bad, it was almost funny, but we came back strong. That is the Wycombe Spirit.

– Yeah, yeah, that’s the Spirit! So for ending this conversation, let’s speak about this year’s Boxing Day. I think it is against Bristol Rovers, a club just promoted to League One, last season. What do you think that would happen on that game?

– Yeah, we have a great History with Bristol Rovers. They were relegated to League Two so we avoid them in the very last games. They are a really well supported Team, so they bring a lot of fans, then Boxing Day is gonna be a busy day in here at Adams Park. I believe the atmosphere is gonna be fantastic. Two teams that are in a similar level according to the size of the club, of the status in the recent History. Their manager, Joey Barton, has a real character. As a manager, he lost his job against Gareth Gainsworth when he was managing Fleetwood. The great thing about football is that all are little stories, all feeding in one game and it’s always different angles of stories… and this game against Bristol Rovers has got lots of those and that is even before that we realize that is on Boxing Day. The Boxing Day element will add to the fans, I am sure, and it’s gonna be a great game at Adams Park, a great atmosphere. I am speaking to you in the very end of October, we are both at mid table, and I am hoping, on the Boxing Day, we are knocking at the door of the Top Six (teams, in the table).

– Yeah, because, at the moment, they are over us, isn’t it?

– Yes, we are in a very similar position in the table. It’s a very tied division, yeah.

– So, hopefully we beat them, so we are into the Play Off positions. Or even higher!

– Fingers crossed.

– Hahaha. Thank you very much, Phil.

Magnificent interview that I could share with a great person like Phil, and after this, I think we need to say goodbye for today. Hoy, 29 de octubre, se cumplen dos años de la primera entrevista que le hice a Phil Catchpole, miembro del equipo de fútbol de los Wycombe Wanderers, para la edición especial del Boxing Day de nuestro fanzine Underdogs. Así que quería rememorar con todos vosotros aquel hermoso momento en el que me vestí de entrevistador.

Hablaré más de Underdogs la semana que viene, ya que si lo extendiera hoy, este post duraría siglos, y solo es martes, así que ambos, tú y yo, tenemos otras obligaciones que cumplir en este segundo día de la semana (al menos para todos aquellos que tenéis la suerte de trabajar de lunes a viernes 🙏🏼).

Como breve introducción a este, y a lo que os contaré la semana que viene, este fanzine llamado Underdogs nació en el corazón del Wycombe Wanderers, el estadio de Adams Park. Y es allí donde decidimos ir, conmigo como representante de nuestro humilde medio, para nuestro volumen especial de final del año 2022:

– Buenas tardes, Phil, encantado de conocerte.

– Yo a ti también, yo a ti también.

– Estamos haciendo una edición especial para el Boxing Day en nuestro fanzine Underdogs. Nos gustaría saber cuáles son tus sentimientos, qué piensas del «Boxing Day», para ti, sólo como aficionado al fútbol.

– Boxing Day en el fútbol es una de las grandes tradiciones en Inglaterra porque el día de Navidad, como en la mayoría de los países del mundo, el país cierra los establecimientos y todo el mundo va a ver a sus amigos, su familia, sus seres queridos y pasan tiempo juntos. Y el Boxing Day es el día en el que se descansa porque todo el mundo está un poco agotado ya que han tomado mucha comida y bebida. Pero para los aficionados es un buen momento para volver a estar juntos porque normalmente la gente está viajando por todo el mundo y haciendo cosas (el resto del año), lo que significa que las familias y los grupos de amigos suelen estar juntos (en estos días festivos). Así que las expectativas del Boxing Day suelen ser muy altas, ya que si vas a ver a tu equipo, los miembros de familias numerosas vienen a verte, así que también te las llevas (al fútbol). Y normalmente hace frío, y el autobús suele estar lleno, la gente no suele trabajar, se lo pasa bien, y es una gran tradición para los aficionados. Y también es bastante duro para los aficionados, porque hay muchos partidos, pero en este Boxing Day, después de que las restricciones (del Covid, en 2022) se levantaran en junio, será el primer partido que irán a ver en esa fecha desde hace tres años, sobre todo si tu equipo juega en casa. Porque a veces, tienes que recorrer un largo camino y viajar incluso el día de Navidad, el día anterior, por lo que es más complicado. Pero si tu equipo juega en casa el Boxing Day, siempre es genial.

– Eso es bueno, eso es bueno. Ahora, como seguidor del Wycombe, como miembro de la plantilla del Wycombe Wonderers, ¿puedes decirnos cuáles son tus sentimientos en el Boxing Day, qué sientes en este equipo, qué ves entre los seguidores de los Chairboys?

– Wycombe es un gran club para trabajar. Soy seguidor del Wycombe desde los años 80, me encanta este club. Trabajar aquí es fantástico porque somos un club pequeño con un gran corazón, y por eso me encanta que se hable de nuestros seguidores como modestos (underdogs), porque el Wycombe Wonderers es modesto, normalmente. Y es un estatus que disfrutamos, nos gusta no ser favoritos porque significa que, incluso los aficionados que no son del Wycombe, los aficionados neutrales que quizá no estén implicados en un partido concreto en el que jugamos, les gusta que ganemos. No sé si ocurre lo mismo en España, pero en Inglaterra a la gente le gustan los equipos que no son favoritos, les gusta que los equipos pequeños lo hagan bien. Así que sí, nos gusta mucho ser modestos, incluso en League One hay muchos grandes equipos que en los años 90 estaban en la Premier League y que quizás tienen veinte o veinticinco mil personas que van a ver su partido en casa. Aquí en Wycombe es un poco más pequeño, pero nos lo pasamos muy bien, tenemos un gran espíritu, tenemos un entrenador de Rock’n’Roll (ya no, y por suerte, están realizando una gran temporada en esta 2024-25, cuando estoy escribiendo este post 🫶🏼🔝) y tenemos una gran Historia, en la Historia reciente es aún mejor.

– Sí, sí, lo sé. Así que, ¿algún momento fantástico, algún mejor momento del Boxing Day que nos puedas contar, algún partido con muchos goles que recuerdes? ¿Alguna fiesta especial en el Boxing Day?

– Creo que en el Boxing Day siempre ha sido mejor jugar en casa. Como aficionado, me traigo a mi hermano, que no viene todas las semanas, pero está por aquí en Navidad con mis padres… Toda mi familia viene. Es habitual que si tu equipo juega en casa, vayamos a verlo toda la familia, así que, como aficionado, todos son momentos especiales. Y como alguien que trabaja para el club ahora es un momento único. Recuerdo un partido del Boxing Day, era un partido fuera de casa, en realidad, fui a Cheltenham, que no está muy lejos. No era un viaje largo, Wycombe Wonderers perdió 4-0, y Gareth Gainsworth era el jugador-entrenador. Me encanta recordar ese partido porque era un momento en el que el club no tenía nada, y creo que fueron los últimos 90 minutos en los que Gareth fue jugador. Un momento en el que teníamos un montón de lesionados (jugadores) volviendo, pero fue un momento en el que íbamos a recuperarnos realmente bien. Estábamos abajo y luego volvimos a subir. Tengo buenos recuerdos de aquel partido, porque fue un partido miserable que perdimos por 4-0. Estuvimos muy mal en ese partido, tan mal que casi daba risa, pero remontamos con fuerza. Ese es el espíritu Wycombe.

– Sí, sí, ¡ese es el Espíritu! Así que para terminar esta conversación, hablemos del Boxing Day de este año. Creo que es contra el Bristol Rovers, un club recién ascendido a League One, la temporada pasada. ¿Qué crees que pasará en ese partido?

– Sí, tenemos una gran historia con el Bristol Rovers. Descendieron a League Two, así que no nos enfrentamos a ellos en las últimas temporadas. Son un equipo muy apoyado, por lo que traen un montón de fans, así pues, el Boxing Day va a ser un día muy intenso (en el buen sentido) aquí en Adams Park. Creo que el ambiente va a ser fantástico. Dos equipos que están en un nivel similar, en lo que al tamaño del club se refiere, y en su estatus en la Historia reciente. Su entrenador, Joey Barton, tiene mucho carácter. Como entrenador, perdió su puesto en beneficio de Gareth Gainsworth cuando dirigía al Fleetwood. Lo bueno del fútbol es que todas son pequeñas historias, todas se alimentan en un partido y siempre son diferentes puntos de vista… y este partido contra el Bristol Rovers tiene muchas de esas y eso incluso antes de que nos demos cuenta de que es Boxing Day. El elemento Boxing Day se sumará a los aficionados, estoy seguro, y va a ser un gran partido en Adams Park, va a haber un gran ambiente. Estamos hablando a finales de octubre, ambos estamos a mitad de tabla, y espero que en el Boxing Day estemos llamando a la puerta de los seis primeros (equipos, en la tabla).

– Sí, porque, de momento, están por encima de nosotros, ¿no?

– Sí, estamos en una posición muy similar en la tabla. Es una división muy igualada, sí.

– Así que, ojalá les ganemos y nos metamos en los puestos de Play Off. O incluso más arriba.

– Crucemos los dedos.

– Ja, ja, ja. Muchas gracias, Phil.

Magnífica entrevista la que pude compartir con una gran persona como Phil, y después de esto, creo que tenemos que despedirnos por hoy.
