Un 7 de septiembre de 2022 se creó el grupo de WhatsApp “Underdogs”. Un grupo al que pertenezco desde el primer día y en el que sus integrantes siempre hemos compartido inquietudes e impresiones sobre equipos underdogs, humildes, de los que no ganan títulos, en forma de trofeo, pero de los que ganan muchísimos títulos, en forma de afición. Hoy, 27 meses después (comencé a escribir en día 7, pero la edición final me hizo que la publicación se realizara ya en 8, día de la Inmaculada Concepción y de mi madre: ¡Felicidades! 😃😘😘), Storm Darragh mediante, me he sentido muy orgulloso de pertenecer a ese grupo y, gracias a ello, y a que el temporal no dejaba mucho más que hacer, me he hecho mi hat-trick particular desde que por la mañana se publicó en el canal de La Media Inglesa el Vlog del Harborough Town, luego, a media tarde, seguí con la peli The Bromley Boys (para los que tengáis Netflix, no hace falta que la compréis de nuevo en YouTube, pero la plataforma de streaming no me dejaba ningún enlace para compartirlo 🤓) y hace un momento he seguido con un par de episodios más de la Temporada 2 de Ted Lasso (disponible en la suscripción de AppleTV y Amazon Prime con algún coste extra). Todos clubes de categorías inferiores a la máxima de sus país, y todos ingleses, sí 👀, como el temporal que me ha permitido quedarme a verlos 😂.

Y cómo empezó esta historia de Underdogs. Pues a raíz de que en abril de 2022, un grupo de 100 personas nos reuniéramos en Adams Park, casa del Wycombe Wonderers, equipo inglés de League One, la tercera categoría del fútbol inglés. ¿Que por qué ese equipo precisamente? Pues porque La Media Inglesa, medio español de fútbol inglés que mencionaba anteriormente, nos hizo fieles seguidores gracias a la buena sintonía que tenían desde tres temporadas atrás, y desde que se levantaron las restricciones del COVID, ya es tradición reunirnos anualmente varios miembros y seguidores de su canal de YouTube para ver un partido de los Chairboys. Justamente un 8 de diciembre de 2020 comenzaba mi membresía Premier League (el nivel superior de sus tres categorías) con ellos, y desde entonces aquí seguimos 🎂🎂🎂🎂.

En aquel momento, y un mes más tarde en Wembley, con motivo de la final de ascenso entre Sunderland y Wycombe (que acabó con ascenso de los primeros a Championship), conocí a Xavi Rossell y Martín Pavón, mis dos compañeros de Underdogs que ahí tan solo comenzábamos una bonita amistad.

Al término de ambos encuentros se lanzaron los dos primeros volúmenes del recién nacido fanzine Underdogs, medio que seguí como aficionado hasta que a inicios de verano 2022, Xavi me pidió si podía compartir en la cuenta de Instagram de Underdogs una publicación de un viaje que yo había realizado al estadio del Forest Green Rovers, un equipo recién ascendido a League One que habíamos conocido a través de un nuevo vídeo de La Media Inglesa. Un par de meses más tarde, el mismo Xavi me preguntó si podía escribir un artículo sobre el Boxing Day inglés, para la edición especial que estaban preparando para finales de año 2022. A ambas preguntas contesté afirmativamente.

Así pues, no tardé mucho en recibir un mensaje de mi tocayo (aunque su nombre empiece por X, técnicamente, es el mismo nombre 😉), confirmando lo que ya era un secreto a voces (al menos para ellos dos). Un 7 de septiembre de 2022 ya era uno más en el fanzine Underdogs 🐶.

Y de ahí hasta ahora hemos seguido en contacto, compartiendo impresiones sobre los equipos más recónditos del fútbol inglés y algún que otro irlandés o incluso español. Pero todos con el título de bajo-perro.

Puede que al final el fanzine no fuese publicado como en un principio nos hubiera gustado, pero el equipo ha permanecido unido, pues Underdogs va mucho más allá de las hojas de una revista. Incluso más allá de las botas de los futbolistas. De los terrenos de juego. Underdogs es un sentimiento que perdura y perdurará siempre en el corazón de todos sus miembros, desde el fundador hasta el último integrante. Underdogs nos ha hecho ver el fútbol de otra manera. Y aún lo sigue haciendo, más de dos años después 🫶🏼.

Este era un episodio en mi blog que tenía en mente desde hace varias semanas. Incluso meses. Hace poco más de 30 días dije que la semana que viene escribiré más sobre Underdogs, cuando apenas se conmemoraban dos años de aquella entrevista con Phil Catchpole en Adams Park, que al final fue doble entrevista para también participar en su podcast Ringing the Blues que aún sigue funcionando, más aún en esta temporada que los Wycombe Wonderers están que se salen en la League One.

Pero al final ha tenido que cuadrar todo para que hoy, exactamente 27 meses después de aquella fundación de grupo WhatsApp, se alinearan los astros para poder hacer un triplete en casa de lo más Underdog (quien sabe si trébol de cuatro hojas si al acostarme me leo unas páginas de Nómada United, un gran libro escrito por un gran periodista y mejor persona que ya mencioné en alguna entrada atrás). Con lo cual, tenía que ser hoy, y por eso todo se retrasó a propósito, de alguna manera… Diosual 😉

On 7 September 2022, the WhatsApp group «Underdogs» was created. A group to which I have belonged since the first day and in which its members have always shared concerns and impressions about underdogs, humble teams, those that do not win titles, in the form of trophies, but those that win a lot of titles, in the form of fans. Today, 27 months later (I started writing on 7th, but the final editing made me publish on day 8th, the day of the Immaculate Conception and my mother: Happy Day of your Name/Saint! 😃😘😘), Storm Darragh through, I have felt very proud to belong to that group and, thanks to that, and to the fact that the storm didn’t leave much else to do, I have made my particular hat-trick since the Harborough Town Vlog was published in the morning on La Media Inglesa channel, then, mid-afternoon, I followed up with The Bromley Boys film (available in Netflix, amongst other streaming platforms, like YouTube or Amazon Prime, but these last two at extra cost) and, just couple of hours ago, I followed up with a couple more episodes of Ted Lasso Season 2 (available in AppleTV subscription and Amazon Prime if you add some extra cost). All of them from clubs below the first football tier of their country, and all of them English, yes 👀, like the storm that has allowed me to stay and watch them 😂.

And how did this Underdogs story begin? Well, because in April 2022, a group of 100 of us got together at Adams Park, home of Wycombe Wonderers, an English team in League One, the third tier of English football. Why that team precisely? Well, because La Media Inglesa, the Spanish English football media I mentioned earlier, made us loyal followers thanks to the good harmony they had since three seasons ago, and since the time when COVID restrictions were lifted, it has become a tradition for several members and followers of their YouTube channel to get together every year to watch a Chairboys match. On December 8, 2020, I started my Premier League membership (the top tier of their three levels) with them, and since then we are still here 🎂🎂🎂🎂.

At that time, and a month later at Wembley, on the occasion of the promotion final between Sunderland and Wycombe (which ended with the first one being promoted to the Championship), I met Xavi Rossell and Martín Pavón, my two Underdogs team-mates, who I was just starting a beautiful friendship with.

At the end of both matches, the first two volumes of the newborn fanzine Underdogs were launched, a media that I followed as a fan until the beginning of summer 2022, when Xavi asked me if he could share on the Underdogs Instagram account a post of a trip I had made to the Forest Green Rovers stadium, a team, at that time, just promoted to League One that we had known through a new video of La Media Inglesa. A couple of months later, the same Xavi asked me if I could write an article about the tradition of Boxing Day in England, for the special edition they were preparing for the end of the year 2022. To both questions I answered affirmatively.

So, it didn’t take long to receive a message from my namesake (although his name starts with X, technically, it’s the same name than mine 😉), confirming what was already an open secret (at least for the two of them). On 7 September 2022 I was already one more in the fanzine Underdogs 🐶.

And from then until now we have kept in touch, sharing impressions of the most low-tier-teams in English football and the odd Irish or even Spanish teams. But all with the title of underdogs.

In the end the fanzine may not have been published as we would have liked, but the team has remained united, because Underdogs goes far beyond the pages of a magazine. Even beyond the footballers’ boots. Beyond the pitch. Underdogs is a feeling that endures and will always endure in the hearts of all its members, from the founder to the last member. Underdogs has made us look to football in a different way. And it still does, more than two years later 🫶🏼.

This was an episode within my blog that I had in mind for several weeks. Months even. A bit more than 30 days ago I said I’d write more about Underdogs next week, just two years after the day since that interview with Phil Catchpole at Adams Park, which in the end was a double interview to also take part in his podcast Ringing the Blues which is still going strong, even more so this season when Wycombe Wonderers are performing a great season in League One.

But in the end, everything had to come together so that today, exactly 27 months after the WhatsApp group was founded, the stars aligned for me to be able to do an Underdog hat-trick at home (who knows if it’s a four-leaf clover if I read a few pages of Nómada United at bedtime, a great book written by a great journalist and better person that I already mentioned in a previous post). So, it had to be today, and that’s why everything was delayed on purpose, somehow… God–incidentally 😉
